                                        Spotting the Signs of Overtraining

How do you recognize the signs of over training?  A long time ago, someone said to me that there is no such thing as over training, just under eating and under sleeping!

I can see the logic in this approach but it is a little out dated, over training can occur when you don't listen to your body and you go for it in every session.  The key to a long term fitness plan is sustainability and longevity.

Below are some of the signs that you may be over training:
                                        • Persistent muscle soreness
                                        • Elevated resting heart rate
                                        • Increased susceptibility to infections
                                        • Increased incidence of injuries
                                        • Irritability
                                        • Depression
                                        • Loss of motivation
                                        • Insomnia
                                        • Decreased appetite
                                        • Weight loss

If you are experiencing any of these signs, give yourself a rest and change you workout plan.

The main sign for me is that I start to not look forward to the workout and the weights or cardio session seems that much harder when I get going.

If I get to that point I will either take a few days off or lower the intensity and change the workout plan.

You need to schedule in rest periods at regular intervals in your training plan, you body will thank you for it and it will not stop your progress where as overtraining will halt any progress until you can fully recover.
